Things were slowly shifting into place throughout the entire novel, creating sinister suspense that set me off the wrong way when I was reading. Comparatively, this one had more of a mysterious feel. Books one and two moved at breakneck speed. The pacing was slightly slower than I expected. When I look at the series collectively so far, I see a natural, deep development and I’m confident that will continue going forward. In terms of comparison to the other books in the series, I would say this one is right on par. Rather than studying for biology (as I should have been), I felt an all-consuming need to find out what happens. I couldn’t think about anything besides Elias, Laia, and Helene. When reading this book, it consumed my entire life. Tahir makes sure all of that is secondary to what is truly important, the reader-character relationship. Unlike other books, which are stretched between plot, setting, romance, etc. Tahir’s books are based on connection with the characters, which makes it incredibly difficult to not care about what’s going on. Everything Tahir writes is incredibly heart-wrenching and brilliantly executed, but it was only in this book that I realized why her books are so amazing. It should come as no surprise that I am absolutely in love with this book. Hi, it’s Aashna! Today I am going to be reviewing A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir.
